THE CIRCUMNAVIGATORS OF MICHIGAN
In January, 2005, a student, with junior standing from Michigan State University, Wayne State University, or The University of Michigan, will receive an award to travel around the world. This award will be $8,000.00 and will be presented by The Michigan Chapter of Circumnavigators. This is a great opportunity for you to begin thinking about applying for this prestigious award. Since 1981, Michigan Circumnavigators, through its Foundation, have sponsored 11 students on an around the world trip during the summer between the junior and senior year. Michael Ducato, a pre-Pharmacy student at Wayne State University, returned in August of 2003, after studying pharmaceutical trends.
The student receiving the grant is looked upon as an ambassador representing both the United States and the Circumnavigators, which have 14 chapters throughout the world. Interested candidates must be American citizens, and will need to complete an application between September 1 and November 1, 2004.
Applicants will be carefully screened by a committee, and several will be chosen to interview. A grantee will be selected based upon the significance of the proposal, written and oral presentation skills, academic record, and achievements while attending college. Now is the time to develop a topic and create an itinerary that takes one all the way around the world.
Grantees often report that the around-the-world experience becomes the highlight of their educational experience. This opportunity allows a student to apply what one has learned on the college campus to a cross-cultural world. Furthermore, a grantee will develop practical skills in planning, managing, and experiencing an itinerary that will circumnavigate the globe. By completing such a trip, the grantee will become a member and have commonality with such former members as President Howard Taft, General Douglas MacArthur, Admiral Richard Byrd, John Philip Sousa, and four U.S. presidents who have served as Honorary President of the Club.
The Circumnavigators Foundation was created by Michigan’s legendary travel writer and host George Perot, and Raymond Dinsmore of New York. You are encouraged to read about the Club Foundation by going to: www.circumnavigatorsclub.org.
The purpose of the Foundation is to promote global fellowship and understanding by sponsoring grantees while they travel and learn. Also, club members benefit upon the grantee’s return, as they listen to a presentation and discover what the grantee learned.
